The Right Ways That You Need To Do For Interviewing Someone

Do you know what the interview is? Maybe some of you have already known what the interview is. The word "interview" sounds familiar in our life. But, let me explain again what is the meaning of interview itself. Based on the definition from Wikipedia, the interview is a conversation between two or more people and takes place between the resource person and the interviewer. The purpose of the interview is to get the right information from trusted sources. Interviews are conducted by submitting a number of questions from the interviewer to the resource person.

Sometimes, indirectly, we actually often do the interviews in our daily life, but in an informal way. We can take an example from some incidents that happened in our society or near our environment. Usually, indirectly we will ask any questions to the people who were at the site of the incident to get rid of our curiosity. We usually ask “What happened?”, “When did the incident happen?”, “How could that happen?” and etc.

Regardless, the interview in journalism also uses the standard 5W+1H questions, among others :
  •   What – What happened?
  •   Where – Where did it happen?
  •   When – When did it happen?
  •   Who – Who was involved?
  •   Why – Why did it happen?
  •   How – How could it happen?

In journalism, there are some great and right ways that you can do for interviewing someone. Actually, there are many ways but you don’t need to do all of them. In this post, I’d like to give you some great ways to do an interview so you can be a good interviewer like a real journalist. Some of that ways are :

A. PREPARATION
           1. Understand a little bit about who you’re interviewing first.

This is very important. Ensure that yourself are ready to interview people. You should remember what is your purpose for that interview and who is the person that you want to interview (interviewee), get to know the subject you are asking about so that you can properly introduce the person and ask the right questions.

 2.  Make and confirm an appointment with the interviewee.
This is especially important if you’re interviewing someone in a different timezone. Some things to confirm are date, time, and also the place where the interview will be held.

3.   Prepare the tools that you will use.
To do an interview you need tools to help you. Don’t forget to prepare all of the tools that you need to do that interview. For example, you may use a notebook, pen or pencil, a recorder, and etc.

4.   Write down the questions you plan to ask in advance.
Be sure you prepared and noted your questions. To reduce any mistakes, this is should be done because you cannot just memorize and give your sudden questions to the interviewee.

  B.    INTERVIEW ITSELF
1.     Start with simple questions
Firstly you should introduce yourself. Tell the interview who you are and what are you doing and also what is your purpose to do this interview.

2.    Provide a Welcoming Environment
In order to get the best answers from the people you interview, you’ve got to create a welcoming environment for them. A comfortable person, one who feels as if they are just having a conversation with a friend, will be more likely to give beefier information in a more enthusiastic and friendly tone, which benefits everyone.

3.   Allow the Person You’re Interviewing to Talk
Ask your questions and let the interviewee talks. Wait 10 seconds if you have to, and don’t rush to fill the silence. Wait and see what they have to say. You’ve got to give the person you’re interviewing a chance to communicate as much as possible without interruption. The more they talk, the better.

4.   Listen and Record!
As you are listening, try to record and if its possible try to write down exactly what they say. Because it will help your writing to have quotes to full form.

5.   Reflect
You should consider how your interview went. Did the interviewee seem engaged? And did you get all the answers for all the questions you needed?

So, those are some ways that you can do for interviewing someone. It can help you to conduct a great interview like a journalist. In the end, I have to say Keep learning and don’t give up!
Good Luck!! ^^
